Public Speaking

Course Aim

To enable Councillors and Officers to create a flexible ‘toolkit’ of skills for use in various public speaking situations; both within the council and at public functions such as consultations etc.

The Audience

You will develop techniques for identifying the nature, mood and aspirations of the different groups of people you are likely to address in the course of your work. Every audience is different and you will learn different strategies to ensure you can quickly build rapport even when tensions and emotions are high.
 

Your Message

You will learn how to clarify the message you need to get across and how to identify the appropriate public speaking style to maximise the effectiveness of your communication. We will show you how to structure your presentation so that your message is understood by the maximum number of people no matter how unpopular or difficult the message is.

Objections

You will learn strategies to defuse volatile situations and remain in control whether you are dealing with a small meeting or a large gathering of people. We will show you how to set up your presentation beforehand allowing you to safely take questions throughout your presentation or at the end – without fear of others hijacking your presentation.
